The Stories of Clucking Hill
Clucking Hill is a collection of gentle, sometimes silly stories of a world inspired by the woods, gardens, animals, and everyday adventures surrounding our home in rural Virginia.
Through paintings, letters, observations, and an upcoming book, these characters explore friendship, curiosity, belonging, resilience, creativity, and the small wonders often hiding in plain sight.
The stories are still growing, but we'd like to introduce a few of the residents.
Alfred R. Hareington
Part-Time Naturalist, Full-Time Gentleman
A bronze rabbit of distinguished character and impeccable manners, Alfred serves as the narrator and observer of Clucking Hill. He is endlessly curious, notices things others miss, and firmly believes that a proper cup of tea can improve nearly any situation.
Lady Elnias
Keeper of the Threshold
A quiet and watchful deer who stands at the entrance to Clucking Hill. Lady Elnias welcomes visitors, keeps old stories, and seems to know more than she ever says.
The Keeper
Steward of Clucking Hill, and Reluctant Director of Special Projects
Practical, dependable, and occasionally bewildered by the happenings around him, the Keeper tends to the land, repairs what needs repairing, and provides a steady hand when plans become overly ambitious. (formerly known as ‘The Warden’)
The Artist
Painter, storyteller, and enthusiastic collector of inspiration. The Artist records the happenings of Clucking Hill through watercolor, observations, and an ever-growing collection of projects. She firmly believes that most things can be improved with paint, plants, or gold accents, a philosophy that keeps the Keeper considerably busier than he would prefer.
Reginald Beetlethorpe
Keeper of Lists and Other Important Matters
organized, dignified, and fond of proper procedures. Reginald prefers that things be done correctly, though life at Clucking Hill rarely cooperates with his plans.
Annaliese Beetlethorpe
Explorer of Roads Not on a Map
Traveler, adventurer, and collector of unusual stories. Annaliese is rarely in one place for long and often returns home with mysterious treasures and improbable tales. She also delights in irritating her twin brother by referring him to as “Reggie”.
Petey
The Master of Sunbeams
A professional sunbeam enthusiast whose greatest talents include napping, supervising garden work, and convincing everyone around him to slow down.
Rosie
Chief Distributor of Excitement
Rosie approaches every day as though it might contain a parade, a squirrel, or both.
Fenwick
Perhaps a Shapeshifting Cryptid. No one knows.
A remarkably fast and delightfully peculiar fellow who can transform an ordinary walk into a full-scale adventure. He is known for running elaborate figure eights and occasionally being mistaken for local wildlife.
